Winnowing machine is the chief town of the Country of Winnowing machine gathering 16 communes: Affoux, Ancy, Dareizé, Dième, Joux, Savages, Pontcharra-on-Turdine, Saint-Apollinaire, Saint-Clement-under-Valsonne, Saint-Forgeux, Saint-Marcel-the Lit, Saint-Wolf, Saint-Romain-of-Popey, Winnowing machine and Valsonne.
Another commune comes to be attached touristiquement to the Country of Winnowing machine: the village of Violay (in the Loire).
